A West Campus Guide to Austin: What to Do Near the University of Texas

Swimmers enjoying Barton Springs Pool in Austin, Texas on a summer day

If you are coming to Austin for a UT visit, a game at the Moody Center or graduation weekend, West Campus is where you want to be. Our Austin homes are all within walking distance of the University of Texas, which means you can put the car in its free parking spot on Friday and not touch it again until you leave. Here is how to spend the time in between.

Start with the campus itself

The UT Tower is the landmark. Guided tours run most days and the view from the observation deck covers the whole city. The LBJ Presidential Library on the east side of campus is one of the better presidential libraries in the country and rarely crowded. The Blanton Museum of Art, near the south entrance, is worth an hour even if you are not an art person, mainly for the Ellsworth Kelly chapel outside.

Eat like a student, but better

West Campus runs on food trucks and cheap tacos, and that is not a complaint. Breakfast tacos are the local religion; you will find them within a five‑minute walk of any of our places. The Drag (Guadalupe Street) has the coffee shops and the late-night options. For a proper sit-down meal, head a little south to Clarksville or across to East Austin, where most of the restaurants people talk about actually are. Barbecue pilgrims should know that the famous places involve queues; go early or go on a weekday.

Get outside

Austin is a city that lives outdoors. Barton Springs Pool is a spring‑fed swimming hole in the middle of Zilker Park and stays around 68°F all year. The Lady Bird Lake trail loops the water for ten miles and you can rent kayaks and paddleboards along it. Mount Bonnell is a short climb for a big sunset view. All of this is a fifteen‑minute drive or a quick rideshare from West Campus.

Live music, obviously

You do not need a plan. Walk down Red River Street or South Congress on any night of the week and follow the noise. The Continental Club on South Congress is the classic. If you are here in March or October, expect the festivals to fill everything up; book your stay early.

Why our Austin homes work for families

Visiting parents tell us the same thing: they want to be close to campus, they want somewhere their student can come over for a real dinner, and they do not want to fight for hotel parking on game day. Our West Campus townhomes have full kitchens, dedicated workspaces, balconies and, in a couple of cases, a game room in the garage with arcade machines. They sleep four to ten, so the whole family fits.
