Crystal Beach, Texas Through the Year: The Best Time to Visit the Bolivar Peninsula

Gulf of Mexico waves rolling onto the sand at Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Peninsula, Texas

Crystal Beach sits on the Bolivar Peninsula, a thin strip of Texas coast across the ferry from Galveston. It is quieter than Galveston, cheaper than most Gulf beach towns, and you can drive your car (or, better, a golf cart) straight onto the sand. Our beach cottage is a few blocks from the water. Here is what each part of the year looks like so you can pick your week.

Spring (March to May): the sweet spot

This is arguably the best time to come. Temperatures sit in the 70s, the water is warming up, the wind is good for kite flying, and the summer crowds have not arrived. Spring break week in March is the exception; it is busy and loud. The rest of the season is calm. Shell hunting is best after the spring storms, and the birding on the peninsula in April is some of the best in the country during the migration.

Summer (June to August): full beach mode

Hot, humid, and exactly what most families are looking for. The days are for the beach and the golf cart, the evenings are for the grill in the yard. Fishing is excellent off the surf and around Rollover Pass. It is the busiest season and the one to book earliest. Our cottage has air conditioning that works, which you will care about more than anything else in July.

Autumn (September to November): the local favourite

The water is at its warmest in September, the crowds have gone home, and the fishing peaks as the bull reds run along the beach in October. This is when the people who live here go to the beach. The only thing to watch is hurricane season, which technically runs to the end of November; keep an eye on the forecast, and know that we have a straightforward cancellation conversation if the weather forces one.

Winter (December to February): for the quiet

Winter on the peninsula is mild, mostly in the 50s and 60s, occasionally grey and windy. You will not be swimming. What you will get is a nearly empty beach to walk, spectacular birding, the Galveston ferry with no queue, and the lowest rates of the year. Couples come for long weekends. Writers come to finish things.

Getting here and getting around

Most guests drive from Houston, about 90 minutes via Winnie and Highway 124. From Galveston, the free Port Bolivar ferry takes 20 minutes and is a good outing in itself; watch for dolphins. Once you are here, the whole peninsula is golf‑cart friendly and that is how most people get around. The cottage has plenty of parking for cars, trailers and boats.

Why book direct with us

You will not pay a platform service fee, and if you need to shift dates around a forecast, you talk to Kelly rather than a chatbot. The cottage is checked between every stay, sand and all.
