Inside Our Lake Freeman House: Kayaks, E-Bikes and a Guest House Bar in Monticello, Indiana

Red kayak pulled up on a lake shore with pine trees and blue sky, ready for a paddle

Our Lake Freeman house in Monticello, Indiana is the one that guests write the longest reviews about. Four bedrooms in the main house, a guest house with a bar, and a waterfront on the Tippecanoe River where it opens into the lake. It sleeps twelve. But the reason people come back is what is already there when they arrive.

The gear is included

Most lake rentals hand you a house and a view and leave the rest to you. This one comes with kayaks, e‑bikes, fishing poles and a shed of outdoor games, all ready to use. There is no rental counter, no deposit, no “bring your own”. A family of twelve can be on the water within ten minutes of unloading the car. Guests have told us it is the difference between a nice weekend and one the kids ask to repeat.

Room to spread out

The main house has three bedrooms upstairs and one down, a full kitchen, and a big living room with a large screen TV for the evenings when it rains. The guest house with its bar area is where the adults end up after the kids are down. Outside there is a large deck and lawn running down to the water. Big groups work here because there is more than one place to be.

The lake itself

Lake Freeman is a long, narrow reservoir on the Tippecanoe, quieter than nearby Lake Shafer and better for paddling because of it. Fishing is good for bass, crappie and catfish. Indiana Beach amusement park on Lake Shafer is a fifteen‑minute drive and a proper old‑fashioned day out with roller coasters over the water. Monticello itself has the essentials: a supermarket, a few restaurants, a good ice cream stop.

How the house is looked after

This is the part we care most about. Every home Kelly hosts is walked and checked between guests, not just cleaned. The kayaks are counted, the bikes are charged, the linens are fresh, the coffee is stocked. New appliances, a top‑of‑the‑line washer and dryer. Guests have described it as feeling like a friend’s lake house rather than a rental, and that is the goal.

Who it suits

Family reunions, three‑generation holidays, groups of friends who want to fish in the morning and play cornhole in the evening, and anyone within driving range of Indianapolis, Chicago or Lafayette who wants a lake without a five‑hour drive. It is about two hours from Chicago and ninety minutes from Indianapolis.

Booking it

Summer weekends go first, then the holiday weeks. Booking direct means no platform fee on a twelve‑person house, which adds up to real money, and it means the person answering your questions about the boat launch is the person who owns the kayaks.
