Most people who stay in our Houston homes are not here for a holiday. They are here for an appointment at the Texas Medical Center, a game at NRG Stadium, or a week of work that runs long. That changes what a “local guide” should be. You do not need a list of museums. You need to know where to get a decent meal at 9pm, where to walk off a hard day, and how far everything actually is.
Getting around from the TMC and NRG area
Our Houston homes sit a few minutes’ drive from both the Medical Center and NRG Park. If you are here for treatment, the METRORail Red Line runs straight through the TMC campus and up to the Museum District and downtown, so you can leave the car parked (parking is free at our places, which is more than you can say for the hospital garages). Rideshares are cheap and plentiful. Give yourself more time than the map says in the morning; Houston traffic is not a rumour.
Where to eat when you are tired
Rice Village, ten minutes north, is the easy answer. It is walkable, low-key and has everything from ramen to proper Texas barbecue without being touristy. For something closer, the stretch of Kirby Drive and the Braeswood area has plenty of casual spots that do takeaway well. If a family member is in hospital and you want somewhere calm, the cafes around Hermann Park are a good place to sit for an hour. And if you would rather not go out at all, we can arrange a private chef to cook in the home. Ask Kelly.
Somewhere to breathe
Hermann Park is the one. It is right next to the Medical Center, has a lake, a Japanese garden and a miniature train that small children lose their minds over. The Houston Zoo is inside it. Buffalo Bayou Park, a little further north, is better for a proper walk or run along the water with the skyline in view.
If you have a free day
The Museum District is on the rail line and several of the museums are free on Thursdays. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Natural Science are the big two. Space Center Houston is a 30-minute drive south and worth it if you have kids or are the sort of adult who still likes rockets.
Why people book with us for Houston
A hotel room gets small very quickly when you are here for two or three weeks. Our homes have full kitchens, washer and dryer, fast Wi‑Fi and a door you can close between you and everyone else. Every one of them is walked and checked between stays rather than signed off from a spreadsheet. If your dates need to shift because a discharge date moved, you talk to Kelly, not a call centre.
Browse our Houston homes or check availability for your dates. If you need to ask something first, just call.
